The Jolly was an early post war subminiature from West Germany, manufactured by Kamera Werstatten AG, Munich and introduced in 1950. Some sources (William White, Subminiature Photography) credit Kamera Werstatten AG, Dresden, East Germany as the manufacturer. It is possible that a small company was formed in Munich and made the Jolly. The East Germany company came out with the Praktica SLR and eventually joined with other firms under the group VEB Pentacon. The West German KW apparently produced no other camera. The base has the engraving PAT. R. GES. MADE IN GERMANY.
Similar to the Kalos in appearance it is made of stamped and formed sheet metal. It is simpler with only T and I shutter settings and a simple lens with a maximum f7.7 aperture. The camera produces 16 exposures,12x12mm (William White, 10x15mm Douglas St Denny) images on 16mm film loaded in a special cassette with the film loaded from the base.
The frame counting system is also quite simple with the frame numbers on the winder spaced to match the distance necessary to wind each frame.
Auction price have been 700EUR in 2004 and 2200EUR on
2002/11/15. See www.oldcameras.at/auswahl.htm for Jolly and other rare cameras. Some cameras may have been covered with coloured leatherette (dark blue and red) instead of the basis black normally found.
