Introduction and contents

The demise of film has been predicted for may years. APS with a digital layer to the film was introduced in 1996 but camera production ceased in 2002, meanwhile true digital cameras continued to get smaller, lighter, less power hungry and significantly cheaper.

This section covers digital version of cameras that replace the tradition compact 35mm camera yet are small enough to fit comfortable in a shirt pocket. The section also includes the range of Minox cameras and pocketable digital camcorders with still photograph features. For the even smaller spy camera types that are pen shaped and credit card size see under tinycams.

With the diminishing size of the digital camera and the inclusion of digital cameras in personal digital assistance, mobile phones and laptop computers and the merging of camcorders with high quality digital cameras the dedicated digital camera will be left to only a limited number of specialised models.
