This was essentially the Minox III with flash synchronization via a PC connector at the top end. This and later models sync at 1/20th [or 1/30th] with flashbulbs and 1/100th [or 1/125th] with electronic flashes. The Minox III-s was the first model to be intensively mass-produced, especially before the introduction of the Minox B in 1958-peaking in 1956 and 1957 when nearly 25,000 were built each year.

The Minox III-s was in production for 15 years, although progressively fewer were built throughout the 1960s. Nearly 4,500 late models made between 1962 and 1969 had the Minox B's neutral density rather than the earlier standard orange filter. Black and gold-plated versions were built. The black "private eye" version is normally found only with imperial scale (in feet and inches) and was not sold in Europe.

Serial numbers run from 58500 to 147494; thus up to 88,994 may have been manufactured. (Perhaps more, since some IIs and IIIs were converted to III-s') The fourth most-numerous model, Minox III-s' in excellent condition are fairly easy to find at reasonable prices. But as with the Minox III, inaccurate shutter speeds are a distinct possibility.

After 1958, the earlier German models were collectively referred to as the "Minox A" in Europe.

Other features include:-

• Red dot hyper focal point introduced after 63713 and before 85387
• Orange and green filters with later models having neutral density and green filters (from about #140000)
• Housing rivets almost unnoticeable
• Early production had "Wetzlar" engraving and sometimes "III"
• After 1962 no "Wetzlar", some cameras have a "III" engraving
• Black variant for US market
• Gold variant produced

Spare scales finished in black with metric markings have been seen, so there must be some cameras produced in metric (thanks Marty).

Obtaining a camera with original box is hard because of age and the delicacy of the boxes .  The set shown below was sold for 202USD,  2003/11. (See auction results).

Some hybrid black/silver cameras turn up at auction. The camera shown below has the engraving 'III' as found on cameras exported to the USA but the dial is metric.

The Minox AIIIs, in particular is often sold with light meter. Box samples are very rare. Not all sellers indicate whether it is imperial (feet and inches) or metric (metres). Meters originally sold in Europe have dual scale DIN/ASA and those originally sold in American are ASA only.
